The Bay
It is a tremendous honour for Dublin Bay to be chosen as the venue for 2012
The choice of Dublin Bay is recognition of the good racing waters in Dublin Bay, the proven experience in event organisation and the shoreside facilities in the waterfront clubs and town of Dun Laoghaire.
In 2009 the event was run in Brazil - the three venues before that were Arhus (Denmark), Kingston (Canada) and Weymouth (Great Britain). The 2010 edition will take place in Istanbul (Turkey) and then Zadar (Croatia) in 2011 before coming to Ireland.
The Race Area
Dublin Bay is an excellent venue for sailing. The horse-shoe shaped bay, open to the east and approximately six miles across, allows for fair racing. There is rarely one side of the course advantaged as the bay is large enough for racing to take place away from the influences of the shore.
Dun Laoghaire
Dun Laoghaire is a historic town on the outskirts of Dublin linked to Dublin Bay by a large man made harbour dating back to the 19th century when it was built for a visit for Queen Victoria. The yacht clubs, harbour, hotels and town centre are all within a short walking distance. The city centre of Dublin can be reached in 18 minutes and the international airport in less than an hour. The range of on-shore facilities, proximity to the capital city and spectator opportunities will make the venue popular for sailors and supporting families alike.
