SUCCESSFUL SL 16 TRAINING WEEKEND IN DUN LAOGHAIRE

On the 17th & 18th April, Olympic multihull sailor Rob White and Serina, the manufacturers of SL 16 multihull, held an introductory training for youth sailors interested in campaigning for the ISAF Youth Worlds in 2012. A group of 14 aspirant sailors from a range of classes (Optimist, Topper, 420, Feva, Laser 4.7) were briefed on the technicalities of the rig and sailing techniques specific to the SL16 and to catamarans in general, particularly important as most came from a monohull background. Saturday's clinic was sailed in a steady Force 3+ and all sailors grappled with the trapeze work and high speeds. The high level of skills and abilities of the sailors were remarked on by Rob White and Jean-Cristophe of Sirena. The boats proved not to be the handful initially feared and the fleet of SL16's carved up Dublin Bay at high speed, including some fairly spectacular three-sail capsizes. Sunday started in clock-calm and gradually built to Force 2-3 allowing some fresh faces in the clinic and giving the sailors more experience under the watchful eye of the coaches and support ribs. All the sailors were converts to Cat sailing by the end of the weekend and it bodes well for the Irish participation in the upcoming ISAF Youth Worlds in 2012.
