Mitsubishi Youth Championship 2010
Over the May Bank Holiday weekend in 2010, 224 boats and 272 sailors representing 26 different Clubs throughout Ireland competed at this national event in Dublin Bay.
After a flat calm Dublin Bay and no racing on Saturday, most fleets completed six of the eight scheduled races by Monday afternoon, although light NE winds predominated over the Bay making racing tricky.
However, many who were to the fore in Schull at Leg 1 of the ISA Youth Trials and Junior Pathway 2010 emerged, once again, at the top of their respective fleets. RSGYC Sailor, Matty O’Dowd, in the Laser Radials, won both Legs, whilst, in the Junior Pathway Classes, Fin Lynch (BSC) in the Topper and Brendan Lyden & Marc Cudmore (RCYC) in the RS Feva did similar.
In the 420 Class, RSGYC Sailors, Jane Butler and Jenny Andreason, who were 2nd in Schull, won Gold. In the Laser 4.7, Darragh O’Sullivan (KYC) won from Stephen Duke (CSC) by one point and, in so doing, was awarded a special training grant to help with his campaign to compete in the ISAF Youth Worlds in Dublin Bay in 2012. In the Optimist Championship Fleet, Ronan Cournane (KYC) showed his strength with three wins out of four races. In the Optimist Trials, Peter McCann (RCYC) built on his impressive lead after Leg 1 in Lough Derg to take the podium.
Another winner was TWITTER with its constant live updates from the water, including mark rounding and provisional results. It was a great success and interesting viewing for all the eager parents, grandparents and friends ashore. It was even viewed from as far away as Australia!
Sincere thanks to Mitsubishi for their continued support of this event.
